Army Navy Game 2018 Scoring Plays

PHILADELPHIA -- In its first matchup with Navy as a ranked team in more than 20 years, No. 22 Army edged out a 17-10 victory and extended its winning streak in the series to three games.

Navy had a chance late to tie or take the lead, but senior quarterback Zach Abey fumbled and Army responded with quarterback Kelvin Hopkins Jr.'s second touchdown of the game to take a 10-point lead.

Army's victory at Lincoln Financial Field caps another strong season for fifth-year coach Jeff Monken, who has led his team to 10 wins for the second season in a row. They'll next take on Houston in the Armed Forces Bowl in Fort Worth, Texas, on Dec. 22.

Army Comes Out On Top In History Filled Game Against Navy At The Linc

Hopkins starred for Army. In addition to two touchdowns, he led his team in rushing with 64 yards, and added 61 yards through the air.

Fullback Darnell Woolfolk added another 62 yards rushing. Safety Jaylon McClinton had an interception and forced a fumble to go along with nine tackles.

Army had the game's longest play on the first drive, when Kell Walker ran for 51 yards, but yards -- and points -- were more difficult to come by on the ensuing drives. Kicker John Abercrombie missed a 33-yard field goal wide right, and Army took a slim 7-0 lead into halftime despite a 180-39 advantage in total offense.

Navy couldn't score deep into the second half and pulled Abey, who threw two interceptions and completed no passes in four attempts. Senior Garrett Lewis provided a spark for the Midshipmen, completing a 34-yard pass to sophomore running back Keoni-Kordell Makekau, easily Navy's longest play to that point in the game.

Malcolm Perry, who had more than 1, 000 rushing yards for Navy this year and rushed for 250 on 30 carries in last year's Army-Navy game, was held under 5 yards rushing until breaking off a 43-yard run in the fourth quarter. Perry finished with 53 yards on six carries.

President Donald Trump, who just before the game announced White House Chief of Staff John Kelly will be leaving his administration by the end of the year, attended the game and participated in the pre-game coin flip. He also announced Army Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Milley will take over as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Army is 9-2, but the Black Knights are only 7 ½ point favorites over 3-9 Navy because this game is always close. Army had lost 14 games in a row in the rivalry before winning the past two. The Black Knights are on a seven-game winning streak, featuring America's second-best rushing attack (303 yards per game). Navy has struggled, but has upset a ranked time 36 times in its history, and doesn't plan to let Army off easy.

Navy hasn't won a road game since late September, however, and Army enters today's game with a national ranking for the first time since 1996.

From the AP: Darnell Woolfolk leads the Black Knights in rushing with 823 yards and Kelvin Hopkins Jr. has 783. Woolfolk has 14 touchdowns and Hopkins has 10 rushing TDs to give Army a potent 1-2 attack. Hopkins is the starting QB and has only thrown 81 passes with six passing TDs, which are dwarfed by his massive rushing totals.

So, Mr. Hokie-fan why the picture of a chunk of the Army-Navy Game? The 2018 NCAA Football Regular Season is now officially in the books. The Army-Navy Game now represents the last regular season college football game to be played. Has anybody really thought about why they love football? Where’d it come from? How’d you get to the point where some odd, 140 year old game involve so much joy, elation, devotion, disgust, worry, anger, frustration? You name it. People dump huge amounts of money on football, especially college football. When did you find yourself immersed in the game to the point that you actually wait patiently every year for the next season to start?

I have asked myself the question every year since I got too badly beat up and hurt, along with being too slow and small to play my favorite position (Nose Guard/Tackle). Lots of people who finally fell out of organized football never really maintain any interest in it. The reality though, is most of those of us who played it at any level feel drawn to it like we were invited to the best concert from our favorite band. You hear the strains of your favorite song, and you are pulled by it. You feel it like a heartbeat.

Why is it that I am so attached to a sport that I spend hours photographing, editing, and writing about my alma matter’s football program? I really can’t point at anything specific; it just seemed to be a way my family’s Fall activities seemed to go.
